Thursday Thirteen
Tracey suggested 13 childhood memories but I've had several attempts at this and it just comes across like I'm a whinging git. Plus I had real trouble remembering 13 things. So I'm going to leave it for a while.
Mas suggested a lot of things:
The first has sort of been done already and the second is very tricky for me because I'm in a philosophical mood and surely every decision made (or not) changes your life in some way.
Anyway I've settled on "If money was no object, 13 places you would rather live. "
These aren't in order.
- The moon.
- In a castle on a cloud.
- Next door to Michelle.
- Not too far from Chloe.
- In Cardiff.
- In London near all the London bloggers.
- Under the sea in a glass (or at least transparent) house.
- Very high up on a glacier in Switzerland.
- The North pole.
- The lowest point of the grand canyon.
- Canada.
- A fantasy world populated with dragons, unicorns and creatures out of legend.
- Right where I live now.
A late one - Big Brother Day 3
Deviating from the regular *ahem* Thursday Thirteen somewhat I'd like to suggest thirteen methods of not watching Big Brother.
- Stab knitting needles in your eyes.

- Sew your eyes shut using cat gut.

- Drink strong liquor constantly for the next three months.

- Travel somewhere remote to work 16 hour days helping to save endangered animals from extinction.

- Fight a guerrilla war against Andy Duncan, chief executive of channel 4 from the hills outside his house.

- Spend every waking moment running in rural areas.

- Hibernate until it's over.

- Fall down a well.

- Bury yourself in ice.

- Get on the show yourself.

- Break into the Big Brother house and gun down all those screeching harpies till their all dead.

- Set off a large enough nuclear explosion to create an EMP pulse to knock out all electronic devices in the UK.

- Curl into a foetal position and refuse to move until it's over.

I don't blog here enough
"13 things you would do if you suddenly won the lottery" as suggested by the ever so clever and super strong Michelle.
This is a tricky one for me because I live such a perfect, charmed life that I want for nothing. Honestly.
- Pay off my mortgage.
- Get tutors for the kids and for me.
- Pay off my friends' mortgages.
- Buy a huge house to live in with annexes for family members who are getting on a bit or just like to visit. It needs to have lots of land for the horses.
- Buy some horses.
- Leave a £1000 tip for the first person to give excellent service in their job.
- Buy a book shop.
- Quit working for other people.
- Buy Chinese food every night just to see how long it takes for The Hildy to get sick of it.
- Learn lots of different languages starting with French, German, Japanese and Italian.
- Travel the world. All of it.
- Fund an Atheist School where only Atheist's are allowed to attend just so I can annoy the Catholic School down the road and get in the papers for being a git.
- Buy lots of houses and let homeless people live in them rent free.
Several Months Late
Suggested by the stunning Michelle:
13 things in the room that you are in right now:
- A green mug.
- A Cisco free pen that has a magic blue light that comes on when you click the end. It's great, like a Doctor Who sonic screwdriver that writes.
- A post it note asking me to "Please do the scanner. Please! Please! Thanks".
- A grey CAT5e network cable.
- A hammer. Obviously for percussive maintenance issues.
- A stack of inspirational pictures that need to go up on the walls. You know the sort.
- My swishy new laptop. It's an HP Compaq nx9420 and is much better than my old one.
- The most beautiful server I have ever had the pleasure of working on. It's 1U and shiny.
- A pile of software licences. Somewhere in there is the Office 2007 OEM installation CD. I hope.
- My shoes. My lovely new green trainers with the slightly too long green laces.
- My travelling expenses. At nearly £50 a day I'd quite like this money back.
- My phone. It's a Blackberry 8700f and it really does stop me from getting away from work. Curse you!
- A 4Gb flash memory stick that I keep calling a pen.
Anyway. I should be finished in a bit and then I can go home and do DIY with The Hildy. What have I missed while I've been working?
A day late
Some lovely people have suggested titles for future Thursday Thirteens. I'm going to do them in the order I receive them and would be more than happy to receive suggestions for future entries
Suggested by the adorable Michelle:
- 13 things you love about your house;
- 13 things in the room that you are in right now;
- 13 things you would do if you suddenly won the lottery and;
13 childhood memories suggested by the fabulous Tracey.
And Mas suggested these:
- 13 things (that mean something) on your desk, (shelves or noticeboard/pinboard/wall/bag) ? (oh, that's similar to the 13 things in the room you're in which was suggested. Hmm)
- 13 decisions that changed your life?
- If money was no object, 13 places you would rather live.
- 13 things that keep you going when the world's against you.
- 13 (bad) things that the world always seems to throw at you.
- 13 truths you've learned.
- 13 secrets you've not told.
- 13 of the best gifts ever given or received by you.
- 13 people you would bring back from the dead and meet if that was something that could be done.
- 13 food or drink items we might not expect you to like, but you do.
- 13 hours in one day.
- 13 mistakes you regret and
- 13 mistakes you do not (regret)
Better get started then...
13 things I love about my house:
- The people who live there. My house is just a place to live. It's my family that make it my home.
- My bedroom. My favourite room in the house. It's usually piled up with ironing or stuff that needs fixing but it has a big bed which is ideal for snuggling.
- The value of it. I know it's greedy but I'm making money just by living there. Think of it as an investment for the future when the country can't support me in my old age.
- The spiffing laminate flooring that I laid throughout each bedroom and the downstairs.
- My book cases. I have stacks of books despite regular donations to the local library and I have to store them somewhere. Fortunately we've got these really old oak bookcases that are very useful for holding books up.
- Having two loos. Don't laugh. There are six people who live in my house and queuing for the loo isn't fun. Neither is having my "reading" interrupted by the plaintive wails of an eight year old announcing that they're "desperate".
- The elephants that live under my stairs. I have these ancient wooden elephants from Africa that live on a chest in the hall, under the stairs. The Hildy has added an elephant tapestry to the wall for added effect and, when we don't pile junk up near it, it looks rathy good.
- The back garden is small but it's good just to sit out there and relax sometimes.
- The bounceoline is an 8 foot diameter blue trampoline that gets regular use by the kids and their friends and one or two "adults" who fancy a quick bounce. Little Al christened it the bounceoline.
- My L shaped living room is really treated as three rooms. One for the computer and music, one for sitting and watching TV, and one for eating food and doing homework.
- My two seater sofa is soft and warm and fits two full sized people, usually me and The Hildy, with one kid able to squeeze in between us for a huggle.
- The clutter. I know that clutter really bugs some people but it makes my house feel "lived in". It's dynamic and you can usually find something interesting near the bottom of a pile of clutter when you tidy up.
- The communal green that the back garden leads on to was placed there for everyone to make use of. Only my kids make use of it so I've essentially got a giant lawn that someone else mows once a month. I've even got a tree to climb.
Next week (if I remember) is Michelle's "13 things in the room that you are in right now".
Thanks.
