Tolworth Toll

Even though I am not an advocate of the phrase 'If you are tired of Tolworth, you are tired of life', Tolworth Broadway was where I found myself last Saturday afternoon.

Tolworth Tower

Previously, the odd glimpse of the monolithic Tolworth Tower from the beer garden in Woodies and driving through were my only experiences of Tolworth, so for me, this was the first exposure to Broadway life in the raw. The afore mentioned Tolworth Tower, that casts a shadow over the whole town, also acts a wind funnel that sweeps the variety of dust, pieces of paper, and fast food wrappings along  the wide vista of the Broadway. This effect, coupled with the late 70's shop front give the place a decaying, down at heel look, but that said, it was full of life.

Probably a bit too much life for that afternoon, as parking was proving to be a problem. My mate, who was giving me a lift in, finally managed to get one of the few remaining spaces along the side of the High Street. An inspection of the local sights followed. According to my mate, who knows the area quite well, there are no shops that sell DVD's or CD's which surprised me, as Tolworth is a sizeable shopping town. Also, Tolworth boasts the site of one of South West Londons newer radio stations, Radio Jackie, whose headquarters are located on the Broadway. According to legend, if you go into the Reception area, you can get a free Radio Jackie car sticker. Eager to put this to the test, and with a half baked idea about trying to blag a Radio Jackie mug, our attempts to get in to the Radio Station were cruelly thwarted by the front door being locked, so it is probably just another urban myth!

Undeterred, we carried on with the true purpose for our visit. We met up with my mates ex-girlfriend, and then went for lunch. The local cafe was recommended by my mate for reasons other than just the food, which I thought was pretty good. The Half Pounder Burger I had was almost comparable to the ones you can get in the Wimpey, and was just as reasonably priced.

Afterwards, as we approached my mates car, it became quickly apparent that the Council had recently introduced parking restrictions along Tolworth Broadway. The telltale white parking ticket was secured unceremoniously under the windscreen wiper, informing my mate that he had been given a £100 fine!

For him it turned out to be a very costly meal indeed!

New beginnings….?

So, another year has gone by. Thinking over the events of the period, highlights for me were:

Getting another car - this was badly overdue as my last one was quite literally on the verge of falling apart!

Starting dating again - this was again long overdue, but proved to be good fun! The woman of my dreams has proven to be quite elusive however...

Re-discovering pool - I always liked this at college. It was only this year that I discovered some local venues where this could be played.

 at the other extreme, the lowlights were;

My new car breaking down - this happened on the A3 and was really embarrassing -I was stuck there for hours before assistance came.

Work got pretty busy - I always resent it when this happens.

My free fall down the squash leagues - this has been happening at an alarming rate. At the moment I am one league away from the bottom one!

The failure of the English Football Team to qualify for Euro 2008 - I really like this sporting event, and this is the only time I can remember when they were not in it.

I am not really one for resolutions. I am just hoping to keep the dating thing going and to improve at squash.

Happy New Year!
